Begin with one reader

“Everyone” is not a practical audience. Think of a particular reader: what do they already know, what do they care about, and what would make this book relevant to them? A precise starting point can support a broader readership later.

Describe the contribution

For nonfiction, identify the question your book addresses and the perspective it brings. For fiction, focus on the emotional experience, central tension, and genre expectations. Avoid a promise that the book cannot support.

Check the presentation

Read the cover, subtitle, description, and author biography together. They should reinforce the same central idea. Ask a reader unfamiliar with the manuscript what they expect to find inside. Their answer can reveal where the message needs attention.

General guidance only. The right approach depends on the book, audience, publishing route, and agreed scope.
